Questions

Uncontrolled diabetes: common questions

Why can blood sugar remain high even when medicines are being taken?

Diabetes can change over time, and insulin resistance, other medicines, infections, thyroid problems, lifestyle factors and changing treatment needs may all contribute. A specialist evaluation helps identify which are relevant.

What does an evaluation for high HbA1c involve?

The consultant reviews your HbA1c and glucose trend, medicines, medical history and risk factors. Kidney, nerve and foot assessments may be recommended when clinically indicated.

Will my medicines or insulin be changed?

Any change is decided by the treating consultant after reviewing your clinical information. Do not stop or change medication on your own.

Why review diabetes and blood pressure together?

Both can affect the kidneys, heart, eyes and nerves, and some medicines need adjusting for kidney function or other conditions. Reviewing all prescriptions together helps build one plan.

Should I bring previous reports?

Yes. Bring your latest HbA1c, kidney function and other relevant reports, older ones if available, and a complete list of current medicines and doses.

Is teleconsultation available?

It may be appropriate for some patients. The coordinator can advise whether an in-person visit is recommended based on your concern and reports.
